This morning, we called up Jessica's brother on the phone when we knew he wouldn't be there. She left a message and hung up. About 15 minutes later, we hit redial, smeared the phone with peanut butter, and left it on the floor. We proceeded to have a conversation in the background about whether the remote control took AAA or AA batteries. Then we moved on to whether we had any in the house and decided that maybe it would be a good time to buy some 9-volt batteries as well. Meanwhile, the dogs are panting and licking the phone, which, as you'll recall, is connected to Jessica's brother's answering machine. After about 5 minutes of this, I asked, "Hey, what do the dogs have over there?" Then Jessica stepped on Molly's tail, eliciting a sudden and loud bark, and we hung up the phone. None of this actually happened. Oh, sure, we talked about it, but the sticking point was how to elicit the bark without injuring the dog. The bark was key. See, Molly has this way of barking loudly and suddenly right behind me. Usually this is at 8am when I've just gotten a bowl of cereal and am blearily checking the news of the morning. Scares the crap out of me, every single time.
